Insightful piece. It gets at some of my unease over the issue.

This is what I wrote on X in relation to a related controversy:

I was a lot more welcoming of gender non-conforming behaviour before it got tied up with rejection of sex itself and rejection of single-sex spaces. In this political climate, it signals approval of an ideology I don’t share.

At a recent public health conference in Delhi, I met multiple men in saris. Some were clearly presenting as transwomen. Others were not.

In theory I don’t have an issue with men wearing saris. In practice, it is clearly a political message. Because you are wearing a sari, am I supposed to accept you sharing my restroom? Are you signaling allyship to transwomen? What is the intent of a male wearing a sari at a high-prestige Delhi conference?
