It sounds a bit cheesy, but you’re one of my heroes. Older gay man who accidentally found Substack and have been loudly shouting out my Gender Critical arguments ever since.
(I’m swooning) I bought and read your book, Trans, and was heartened to read in print so much of what had troubled me about the Gender Queer movement. However, whenever I would try to comment rationally in social media or on digital news articles, my words were removed as violating their standards. I came across LGB Alliance USA through their YouTube videos and they directed me to something called SubStack so I downloaded the app to regularly receive their content. It was amazing. I was finally able to express my concerns without censorship. I found I was good at expressing the arguments in a well articulated way. I was invited to be on a podcast to share my GC views as an older gay man.
I can’t speak for gay men in other countries but here in the US I suspect that their staunch Democrat loyalty feeds their continued support of the Gender Queer nonsense, especially after Trump came out so strongly as “anti trans.”
Welcome to Substack! And btw, LOVE the long hair! It really suits you.
I think a lot of older gay men remember growing up isolated, sometimes not even knowing other gay men existed, and so painfully empathise with "trans" children or anybody who claims repressed or marginalised status. It's a luxury belief, not in the flaunting way Rob Henderson talks about, but rather in the sense that it's an easy belief to hold when you have the luxury of not dealing with the consequences.
Me - I have one foot in normie child-raising married life, and one - withdrawing! - foot in geeky alt sjw culture where this stuff breeds. I have not only seen the bigger picture, but also seen the gender woo in context with other weirdness, and felt the threat to me and mine. I'm also dismayed by the smug misogyny of many of my (former) male friends and frustrated by the cancel culture that makes it hard to tackle them.
You’re worth every cent but I am broke. Love your insights on x and now on substack, and your important book, which I got into my local library in a disgustingly captured US New England town and state, which we are working to peek to little avail so far. But activists have to have an optimistic streak, among their despair.
That’s great, like reading your next book. And to share another substack, which we in the woke, Democratic state of Massachusetts put out: Ma4women.substack.com. Because the US is so large, we began our group to try to tackle the gender madness in a small area only. Encouraging others in each state to organize also. We look to you amazing UK women who have been leading the way. We are making some progress, finally.
Helen, I’ve so appreciated hearing your voice during this insanity. My son came out as trans at age 20 and is 23 now. No medicalization or surgeries yet and I’m praying hard that he chooses to not wreck his body in that way 🙏🙏🙏 Thank you for your voice and your message and your book!
I totally understand why you decided to write on Ghost initially. I’ve been subscribed to Joyce Activated for a long time! Congrats on your move - hope all goes smoothly. You are my hero, Helen! I know loads of women in Australia feel the same. ❤️
Helen Joyce on Substack - now we are all complete! Your book ‘Trans’ had the most profound effect on me (and many others) and gave me the confidence to fight the education system I work in (still fighting, and keeping up the good fight). You also very kindly signed my book at Graham Linehan’s leaving do and were so very lovely to me and my old man. A class act and brilliant to have you here…
It is GREAT to “see” you here. As a paid subscriber to your Ghost account, I have learned an enormous amount from your essays. I will be delighted to be “imported” as a paid subscriber here (or however that ends up working out).
Welcome! I’m so happy to see you here. You’re a hero to me and I’m excited to see what you publish here ❤️ I sent some friends your essay that discussed Swan Lake just last night!
I’m so happy! I’m a paid subscriber for the old newsletter, and I have access on the web, but I haven’t received emails from your newsletter for at least a year. So I miss most posts until they’re weeks old. This will fix it! 🎉
I also predict you’ll get a lot more exposure and $$$$ on Substack. Welcome!

Likewise. You're fighting the battle I can't... except at a personal level, and your writing generally helps with that.
You're both sweethearts. And gay men who see what's happening are a big source of comfort to me. So many don't.
